TAN Registration

TAN Number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number — short form utilized for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. Each Assessee prone to deduct TDS is required to apply for TAN and will quote this number in all TDS Returns, TDS installments, and some other correspondences in regards to TDS with the Income Tax Department.

The inability to do so may draw in a heavy punishment of up to ₹10,000. TDS Returns and Payments won't be gotten by the Banks if TAN isn't quoted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any person or entity responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS) must obtain a TAN. This includes companies, firms, LLPs, proprietorships, trusts, and even individuals running a business who are required to deduct tax at source. TAN must be quoted on all TDS returns, TDS payments, and correspondence with the Income Tax Department.

The documents typically required for TAN registration are: PAN card of the entity or proprietor, Certificate of Incorporation or Partnership Deed or LLP Agreement (depending on entity type), address proof of the business premises, identity and address proof of the authorised signatory, and the contact details (phone, email) of the applicant.

TDS Returns are filed quarterly. The due dates are: Q1 (April–June) — 31st July; Q2 (July–September) — 31st October; Q3 (October–December) — 31st January; Q4 (January–March) — 31st May. TDS payments are generally due by the 7th of the following month, with April–February payments due by the 7th and March payments due by 30th April.

Service Tax, now subsumed under GST since July 2017, previously followed a monthly or quarterly payment cycle. Under the current GST regime, the relevant equivalent is the GST payment cycle. Payments are typically due by the 20th of the following month for monthly filers.

The penalty for failing to obtain TAN or failing to quote it where required is up to ₹10,000 under Section 272BB of the Income Tax Act. Additionally, TDS Returns and Payments will not be accepted by Banks if TAN is not quoted, which can lead to further compliance issues and interest liabilities.
