Business Income Return Filing
Overview

Business Income Return Filing: For Professionals, Freelancers & Businessmen

If you earn from a business or profession — as a freelancer, consultant, doctor, lawyer, engineer, CA, or as a business owner — your Income Tax Return filing works differently from a salaried individual's. Different ITR forms apply, different rules govern presumptive taxation, and books of accounts may or may not be mandatory.

At S.K. & Associates, we simplify this entirely. You can file ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-4S, and ITR-V for free on your own — or let our qualified CAs prepare, review, and file on your behalf.

Presumptive filing under ITR-4S takes less than 10 minutes for most professionals and freelancers. For businesses maintaining books of accounts, our Super and Mega plans cover bookkeeping, Balance Sheet, P&L, and advance tax payments.

Who It's For

Who Should File a Business Income Return?

Business income return filing applies to a wide range of professionals, freelancers, and business entities.

Freelancers

Independent contractors, content creators, designers, developers and consultants earning from client work.

Professionals

Doctors, lawyers, CAs, engineers, architects, consultants — anyone in a "specified profession".

Small Business Owners

Proprietors, traders, shopkeepers and service businesses with simple accounting needs.

Self-Employed Consultants

Anyone earning commission, professional fees, or advisory income without a formal company structure.

ITR Forms

Which ITR Form Applies to You?

Two main options for business and professional income — choose based on whether you maintain books of accounts.

ITR-4 — With Books of Accounts

Choose ITR-4 if you maintain books of accounts and get your accounts audited.

  • Suitable for businesses maintaining proper books
  • Mandatory if accounts are audited
  • Requires Balance Sheet & P&L statements
  • Applicable for turnover above presumptive limits
ITR-4S — Presumptive Income

Choose ITR-4S if you do not maintain books of accounts and opt for presumptive taxation.

  • File in under 10 minutes — no bookkeeping required
  • For professionals & freelancers with simple income
  • Turnover or gross receipts within specified limits
  • Also for plying, hiring, or leasing goods carriages

Quick rule of thumb: Maintenance of books of accounts + audit = ITR-4. Presumptive taxation without books = ITR-4S. If you're unsure which applies to you, our CAs will confirm it in a free consultation.

Deadlines

Business Income Return Filing Deadlines

The due date depends on whether your accounts need to be audited.

Non-Audit Cases
31st July

For businesses and professionals not required to get their accounts audited, the due date is 31st July of the Assessment Year.

Audit Cases
30th September

If you are required to get your accounts audited, the last date for filing your return of income is 30th September of the Assessment Year.

Compliance

Books of Accounts & Audit Requirements

Understanding when you must maintain books of accounts — and when audit becomes mandatory.

When Books of Accounts Are Mandatory

If you are engaged in a specified profession and your gross receipts exceed ₹1,50,000 in all three years immediately preceding the previous year — or if you're starting a new business and gross receipts are likely to exceed ₹1,50,000 — you must maintain books of accounts.

Specified Professions

Legal, medical, engineering, architectural, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration, film artists, company secretary, information technology, and authorised representative professions.

When You Can Opt for Presumptive

You can opt for presumptive taxation if your turnover or gross receipts are within specified limits, or if you're in the business of plying, hiring, or leasing goods carriages.

When Audit Becomes Mandatory

You are required to get your accounts audited if your turnover or gross receipts exceed ₹2 Crore (for business) or ₹50 Lakhs (for a profession).

If You Don't Opt for Presumptive Despite Being Eligible

You must maintain books of accounts and get your accounts audited — even though you were eligible for presumptive taxation.

How It Works

How Business ITR Filing Works With Us

From form selection to final filing — here's the flow.

01
Step 1: Confirm Your ITR Form

We check your income type, turnover, and whether you maintain books of accounts — and confirm whether ITR-4, ITR-4S, or ITR-3 applies to you.

02
Step 2: Choose Your Filing Plan

File free on your own, or select one of our CA-assisted plans (Saving, Super, or Mega) based on whether you need bookkeeping, Balance Sheet, or advance tax support.

03
Step 3: Submit Your Income Details

Upload your gross receipts, expenses, TDS certificates, bank statements, and (if applicable) Balance Sheet and P&L data. Our team reviews everything.

04
Step 4: CA Review & Tax Optimization

Our CAs reconcile your data, apply eligible deductions, and suggest tax-saving opportunities before finalizing the computation.

05
Step 5: File Your Return

Your return is filed directly with the Income Tax Department. You receive the ITR-V acknowledgment, which we help verify and track for refunds.

Pitfalls

Common Mistakes in Business ITR Filing

Choosing the wrong ITR form: Filing ITR-4S when you actually maintain books of accounts — or filing ITR-4 when you were eligible for presumptive — creates mismatches that trigger notices.
Missing the audit-linked deadline: If your accounts require audit, the due date shifts to 30th September, not 31st July. Assuming the individual deadline applies is a common error.
Not maintaining books when mandatory: Crossing ₹1.5 Lakh gross receipts in a specified profession triggers the books-of-accounts requirement, even for new businesses just starting out.
Presumptive filing despite audit requirement: If turnover crosses ₹2 Crore (business) or ₹50 Lakhs (profession), presumptive filing is no longer an option — audit becomes mandatory.
Skipping quarterly bookkeeping until year-end: Deferring all entries to March causes errors, missed deductions, and rushed filings. Quarterly bookkeeping (as in our Mega plan) avoids this entirely.
Missing advance tax payments: Businesses and professionals must pay advance tax quarterly. Missing these instalments attracts interest under Sections 234B and 234C.
